Amazon Flex Delivery Jobs review: A solid way to earn extra cash is by delivering Amazon packages and groceries using your car.

What is Amazon Flex?

Amazon Flex is a courier service to deliver packages or groceries to Amazon customers. You can earn up to $25 an hour as an independent contractor.

  • Amazon.com: You might be delivering anything sold on the website. You’ll pick up orders from an Amazon delivery station near you.
  • Amazon Fresh and Prime Now: Deliver groceries and household supplies from a delivery station.
  • Instant Offers: Based on your location, deliver one-off packages. It’s not available everywhere.
  • Store Orders: Pick up orders to deliver from local stores and restaurants instead of a delivery station.

Where is Amazon Flex available?

Amazon Flex jobs are available nationwide. New driver opportunities are based on needs in a specific area. You can also find available driver slots through the website. If your location has no openings, you can add yourself to a waiting list to be alerted when new opportunities open.

How Amazon Flex Works

As an independent contractor, you are not employed by Amazon directly and can work when you please.

With the Amazon Flex app, you can view available jobs, reserve delivery block times to organize your schedule, and follow the instructions to complete package and grocery deliveries.

This is how Amazon Flex works:

  1. Everything you need is in the app.
  2. You are notified of your block start time and receive a notification one hour in advance to head over to your starting location.
  3. Once at the pickup location, you’ll load your vehicle and follow the instructions in the app to deliver the packages.
  4. If you can’t make it to your scheduled delivery block, you can cancel 45 minutes before the start time. Not doing so can be a negative mark on your track record.
  5. Earnings are made within days via direct deposit.

What happens if you’re having delivery problems? When issues are encountered during delivery or packages are undeliverable, you have direct access to support staff within the app.

Side Hustle Potential

Amazon Flex drivers can make between $18 and $25 per hour based on car capacity. Your earnings potential depends on how many blocks are completed and the car type. Someone with a larger car can deliver more packages. For example, if you’re driving a minivan, you can earn more than someone with a midsize car.

Earnings Tip: Schedule delivery blocks during busy times or choose deliveries with tipping to get the most pay. You can identify busy times and deliveries with tips in the app. Also, keep the notifications on. Oftentimes, Flex will send out requests for more drivers with higher payments. They need more packages delivered, so this is an opportunity to earn more.

Getting Paid

  • Paid twice weekly: Payment days are Tuesdays and Fridays, and standard delivery drivers are paid on their most recent deliveries. Deliveries with tipping are paid after tips are processed.
  • Payment: Made via direct deposit.

Amazon Flex does not pay for gas.

Amazon Flex Driver Requirements

To be an Amazon Flex delivery driver, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Own a smartphone with the Amazon Flex app downloaded
  • Have a four-door SUV, van, pickup with a covered bed, or midsize vehicle
  • Have car insurance

Drivers are covered under Amazon’s commercial policy free in all areas except New York. In NY, you may need rideshare auto insurance added. Understand that your car insurance policy will not cover you while making deliveries.

Overall Amazon Flex Review

Our review of Amazon Flex resulted in a positive analysis. However, other Amazon Flex reviews were lackluster. On Trustpilot, drivers report not making as much as they thought. While on Reddit, drivers share Amazon Flex deliveries are much better than the other delivery apps. On Glassdoor, one of the largest employee review websites, former and current drivers rate it 3.5 out of 5 stars, with 61% recommending Flex.

Should you drive for Amazon Flex? There are good opportunities to make money. It may not become a full-time gig, but it could be a great way to supplement your income.

  1. Mark

I’ve done Amazon Flex for 6 months from their Newark area locations. It’s been a great side hustle that’s turned into a full-time income. The app is really easy to use, pickups are a breeze, and any issues arise Amazon support is there. The only issues I’ve had is with navigation. It’s gotten better.

If you have a large size car, it’s a really great way to make additional income.

Before writing this review, I wanted to test out Amazon Flex for real. So I signed up and delivered packages and groceries in Northern NJ. In a period of 3 months, I made well over $5,000 working about 20 hours a week (3-4 hours of delivering). I was solidly earning about $30 dollars an hour.

I lived near the Elizabeth warehouse so it was easy for me to get last minute gigs that often paid more. I took the earliest gigs possible since I didn’t want to deal with traffic. And I would take on additional gigs if I got done with my deliveries early.

Overall, my experiment delivering for Amazon Flex was a positive one. I realized it is a legitimate way to earn extra money. Sure, some people could make a full-time living with it but there’s a lot of unknowns like gig availability and offers.

For people looking to make extra income, it’s a good choice if you love driving around, listening to podcasts or audiobooks, and don’t really want to deal with people.

The one thing I didn’t consider was my car’s wear and tear and the cost of gas. I didn’t factor this in because I focused on income, not the profits.
