You are unable to consolidate private education or student loans into the federal consolidation program. However, you can refinance your federal student loans and private student loans together into a new loan with a private lender.
When you “consolidate” your private student loans with federal student loans you are actually refinancing your loans into a new loan. There are benefits to refinancing such as a single payment versus multiple payment, a lower interest rate, better terms and additional benefits. However, refinancing your federal student loans into a private lender will remove the federal benefits offered such as Income-Base-Repayment (IBR) for financial hardships.
