What is ibotta?
Ibotta is a free mobile app that enables you to receive rebates or cash back on select products available at hundreds of stores (Walmart, CVS, Amazon, etc). IBotta is not a couponing app. It’s a rebate app. This means you can still use coupons, rewards programs, manufacturer rebates, and other money-saving apps, and still get back cash from your purchases. Additionally, you can receive rebates for on-sale items too.
How do you get cash back?
In order to get rebates, you’re required to add a couple extra steps before you make a purchase and redeem your rebate.
- Find rebates – Before you shop, add rebates on products by completing simple tasks. You can actually add these products after you shop too. I find it easier to look for items I need and add it to my shopping list. This way I am not sifting through receipts looking for items.
- Go shopping – Buy the products you selected at any participating store. Don’t forget your receipt.
- Redeem – Redeem your rebates by taking a photo of your receipt or scanning the QR code or barcode. In some instances, you can connect loyalty cards (Plenti card) for quicker redemption. Ibotta will match the items you bought to the rebates you selected and give you the cash.
- Get cash – Your cash back will be deposited into your Ibotta account in 48 hours.
Are you shopping with your smartphone? Use the ibotta app first and click on the online store you plan to shop. Ibotta will open the app (if installed on your phone) and you can continue to shop as usual. Ibotta will register and track the purchase you made within that app.
My iBotta experience
After my one month test, I received $37.95 in cashback. Not too bad for purchases I would have made either way. With ibotta, the percentage of cash back earnings vary based on the rebate offers. The rebates are dollar amounts. If you use the app (or the website) to buy from a participating online store, you’ll get a percentage of your purchases. For example, Walmart.com offers 2% cashback. I purchased an item on Walmart.com for pickup at the store. When I was at Walmart, I bought Nutella hazelnut spread for $2.98. Within 24 hours, I received $1.48 from my Walmart.com purchase and $2.00 rebate for my in-store Nutella purchase.
Where can you get cash back or rebates?
There are hundreds of brands that offer purchase rebates at many participating stores. These stores include Walgreens, Walmart, CVS and many supermarkets. Additionally, a growing list of online stores makes cash back opportunities more available.
You can earn rebates for buying groceries like milk and eggs, purchasing clothes, electronic gadgets, dining out, and booking flights and hotels, and so much more. Rebates can be a dollar amount or a percentage of your purchase. Also, ibotta offers general rebates that range from $0.25-$0.50 for scanning a receipt from a participating retailer.
My Smile Summary: ibotta Review
Before making a recommendation to our members, I wanted to try ibotta and see how much cashback I can earn in a month. Here is how it went: I didn’t change my spending habits. But I made a conscious effort to use the app before I made any purchases. I actually found myself looking for new brands to try. For instance, I wanted ice tea and discovered a new ice tea brand. I bought the product, scanned the receipt, and got the rebates.
Ibotta is a good rebate app to help you reclaim some of the money you’ve spent. It requires some tedious steps but the app is increasingly improving to eliminate them. If you shop (and we all do), ibotta is a solid choice to get back some of your hard-earned cash.
You can use my link to get $5 added to your account if you receive a rebate within the first 7 days. There is one thing I want to note: don’t buy anything just to earn cashback. Your cash back earnings won’t mean much if you’re spending money you otherwise wouldn’t spend.
